How to Use CBD Oil for Insomnia

According to research, between 30% and 50% of all U.S. adults experience regular symptoms of insomnia. This is a common sleep disorder that can make it difficult to go to sleep or stay that way. It can also cause you to wake up too early, without the ability to drift back to dreamland.

In your quest to achieve a full night’s rest, you might have tried every type of solution on the market. From meditation to over-the-counter medications, there are many different resources aimed at curbing insomnia.

If they haven’t worked, have you considered taking CBD oil for insomnia? Today, we’re sharing how it works and what makes it so effective.

Understanding Your Sleep Cycle

To understand how CBD for sleep works, it’s important to understand the mechanisms behind your sleep cycle. Despite how irregular yours might feel at times, we all have natural patterns for sleep.

In healthy adults, sleep cycles begin with the non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) phase. It starts at the N1 phase when your brain waves are the most active. Then, it progresses to N2 and N3.

By N3, your brain waves are slower and more synchronized. Throughout this progression, your eyes remain still. Then, you shift into rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep or active sleep.

During REM sleep, your brain exhibits low-amplitude, high-frequency waves, and alpha rhythms. Your eyes also move beneath your eyelids. Over the course of a typical night, you’ll continue to alternate between NREM and REM sleep cycles, with REM comprising around 20% to 25% of your total sleep.

Your first NREM sleep cycle should last between 70 and 100 minutes, while the second and subsequent cycles will last between 90 and 120 minutes. Your first REM sleep cycle may only be about five minutes long but usually becomes longer through the night.

Insomnia and Your Circadian Rhythm

Your circadian rhythm determines how fully and effectively your NREM and REM cycles are carried out. This is your body’s natural response to light and darkness, defined by all the physical, mental, and behavioral changes you go through in a 24-hour cycle.

Insomnia is a type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder. It’s the result of desynchronization between your body’s internal sleep/wake rhythms, as well as the light/darkness cycle. In addition to restlessness, you may also experience excessive daytime sleepiness.

The Role of CBD

What does all of this science have to do with CBD?

The sleep/wake cycles described above are directly linked to your body’s endocannabinoid system. This is the system responsible for helping you achieve homeostasis or internal balance. It stabilizes your circadian rhythm, prompting you to go to sleep at night and gently waking you in the morning.

This system is spread throughout your body. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found in your:

  • Brain
  • Organs
  • Glands
  • Connective tissues
  • Immune cells

When signals from those cells aren’t speaking to one another as they should, you can experience a range of issues that affect your physical and mental health. Insomnia is one of them.

The CB1 receptor plays an important role in your endocannabinoid system. When it’s properly activated, it helps induce sleep and stimulate wakefulness.

CBD interacts indirectly with this receptor, as well as other proteins and cells in your brain. When you ingest CBD oil, it stimulates this interaction and helps support successful endocannabinoid function.

Other Endocannabinoid Connections

In addition to regulating your sleep cycles, your endocannabinoid system is also involved in a range of other activities related to your health.

The interactions that take place within it can affect your mood, appetite, stress levels, and comfort levels. When these connections are thrown off-kilter, you’ll feel the imbalance in your everyday life.

You might find that you’re always hungry, or never hungry. You might also feel stressed out, nervous, or in physical discomfort. All of these health concerns can negatively interact with your sleep cycle and cause insomnia.

When you take CBD oil, the substance interacts with the receptors that are involved in those interactions. This helps correct the imbalances that are at work, helping your endocannabinoid system function as it should.

Taking CBD Oil For Insomnia

There are many different ways that CBD can enter your body.

First, you can apply it as an oral tincture under your tongue. This technique is known as the sublingual method.

You can also ingest it through gel capsules, gummies, or edibles. Topically, you can find it infused into lotions, creams, and balms.

If you suffer from insomnia, take a look at our G’Night Sleep Capsules. Designed to help you unwind and relax, these capsules contain 750mg of CBD, as well as 150mg of melatonin and 150mg of CBN.

Often called the sleep hormone, melatonin is a natural hormone that your brain produces when it senses darkness. It helps set your internal clock and plays an important role in your sleep cycle. It’s the ideal addition to our Sleep Capsules, especially when taken alongside CBN.

Known as the cannabinoid for sleep, CBN is another powerful compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. Its benefits have been widely studied for their potential to soothe symptoms of insomnia. You can read more about the differences between CBD and CBD in our recent post.

Find the Sweet Slumber You Deserve

Your overall wellness hinges on your ability to give your body the rest that it needs. If you suffer from symptoms of insomnia, your sleep cycles might not be where they should be.

This imbalance is often linked to your endocannabinoid system, which controls and regulates your circadian rhythm. When the cells in your brain and body are connected properly, you’ll fall asleep easily and wake up feeling rested. By taking CBD oil for insomnia, you can help initiate this process.
