Your first NREM sleep cycle should last between 70 and 100 minutes, while the second and subsequent cycles will last between 90 and 120 minutes. Your first REM sleep cycle may only be about five minutes long but usually becomes longer through the night.
Insomnia and Your Circadian Rhythm
Your circadian rhythm determines how fully and effectively your NREM and REM cycles are carried out. This is your body’s natural response to light and darkness, defined by all the physical, mental, and behavioral changes you go through in a 24-hour cycle.
Insomnia is a type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder. It’s the result of desynchronization between your body’s internal sleep/wake rhythms, as well as the light/darkness cycle. In addition to restlessness, you may also experience excessive daytime sleepiness.
