CBD and Depression: How It Can Help You Manage Naturally

Major depressive disorder affects more than 17 million adults in the United States. Despite this, depression can feel isolating.

There are plenty of treatment options to help manage depression. Many people have their own reasons for opting against pharmaceuticals. Some are medication-resistant. Others feel uncomfortable using medication unless it’s the last possible option.

While therapy is the most effective aid for many mental health conditions, there may be another way to help ease your suffering naturally.

Keep reading to learn why more and more people are opting to try CBD for depression instead of the common pharmaceutical options.

What Is CBD?

CBD is a popular wellness product that’s been all the rage lately. It’s not a buzzword, though.

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It’s a compound found in cannabis or hemp. It’s related to the popular medicinal and recreational substance, THC (or the compound found in marijuana).

The difference here, though, is that CBD doesn’t have the same psychoactive effects. In short, it won’t give you the sensation of being “high”. For this reason, it’s popular for medicinal use.

CBD can be consumed through many different delivery methods. As CBD is so popular, it’s become “trendy” to use it in different products. While oils are the most popular, it’s also found in vaporizers, edibles, lotions, and even bath bombs.

Each delivery method has its own pros and cons but many people find relief for their various ailments through the aid of CBD.

How Does CBD Help with Depression?

CBD, while not noticeably psychoactive, does work on the brain in its own ways.

It interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in the brain which impact mood, pain, and more. That said, it doesn’t seem to react with them in a way that would imply that CBD is addictive (giving it a leg up on pharmaceutical medications that may be habit-forming).

Depression can have several chemical causes. The two primary chemicals that one thinks of when considering depression are serotonin and dopamine, considered happiness and pleasure chemicals.

When these chemicals are depleted or the brain is unable to access them, depression can set in.

While CBD doesn’t boost serotonin or dopamine directly, it does affect the channels and receptors through which these chemicals travel, potentially making them more accessible to the depressed brain.

While human testing for CBD is still limited, there is convincing evidence through animal testing to suggest that CBD has an overall positive impact as a therapeutic agent on several mental health conditions, depression included.

Are You Suffering From Treatment-Resistant Depression?

Depression is challenging, and when you don’t want to attempt pharmaceuticals (or when they just don’t work for you) the experience can feel neverending.

If this sounds familiar, CBD might be the right choice for you and your depression. To learn more about how CBD may help you, or to purchase some high-quality CBD products for yourself, visit our site and check out the shop
